One Last Look...

Before I say goodbye to 2011, I have to indulge myself in one last look back... Here are are a few of my favorite photos that represent some of my stand-out moments from 2011.

On a lighter note, we added some furry creatures to Swanson Acres. This is one of two bunnies that Abel brought home last summer--Cookie Dough. This little guy has provided endless frustration by his numerous and unexplained escape tricks. It's a miracle he's not been gobbled up by coyotes, since we often find him out in the middle of street or in the neighbors back yard after a night of bunny revels. His partner in crime (un-pictured) has been officially re-named Houdini by Abel.

Family. We had some fun visits with the cousins this year. Laura and Ben came down for a Santa Barbara weekend and we got to have some beach time with the two of them.

Injuries. Ciza's head concussion in March was a setback, and then he injured his ankle during the first week of practice in August. He missed the entire football season this year. A big disappointment for this young athlete.

There is so much more. These snapshots don't even begin to capture all the more subtle, personal, "inside" things that more truly represented my journey in 2011. But now, I'm determined to start the new year off on the right path! In the words of Andy Stanley in his book, The Principle of the Path, I am re-inspired to commit myself to traveling with “direction, not intention” in 2012.

Traveling At a High Rate of Speed

What do Susan Boyle and yellow angry birds have in common? They are both icons that have inspired me in 2011.

A year ago, in January, I felt God impress upon me a challenge for 2011--to "travel at a high rate of speed." In my mind's eye, I captured a picture of those yellow angry birds, hurtling through the air in a slow arc, until with one tap of a finger, they charge toward their mark with amazing velocity and power.

Then half way through the year, I ran across a video of Susan Boyle. Imay have been the only person in America who didn’t know who Susan Boyle was. That happens to mesometimes—I stumble across an icon who is popular in the mainstream of culture,only to realize that I’ve been obliviously unaware of something that hascaptured the attention of everyone around me. But, now, I've watchedSusan Boyle's audition on Britain’s Got Talent dozens of times. I’m in love withthe story of Susan Boyle. She has represented for me something important that God's been working in my life in 2011. It comes from Philippians 3:14. Paul encourages,

"I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

I press on... I strain forward… Iforget what is behind… I strain forward to what is ahead… I hold true to what I have attained. In other words, the apostle Paul says, my pursuit ofholiness is active and passionate: I desire to be more like Jesus Christ, and Ipress on to attain that.’

The Greek word dioko, "press on," means "hasten, run, press on" This is the same word which elsewhere is translated "persecute, run after, pursue." It implies a kind of dogged persistency and urgency

Susan Boyle is a visual picture of that kind of living. She is a woman who was not attractive according to the world’s values. She wasperceived as quirky among those who would judge by more sophisticatedstandards, yet…she is a woman who bravely strained forward. She took a risk. In front of a crowd full of strangers who are laughing at her, she accelerated her speed. Idon’t know anything about Susan Boyle’s level of faith, but regardless, she is one of my new heroes.

For all of 2011, I've had a strong sense of God, standing before me, urging me forward, cheering me on, calling me tostretch myself and build endurance in my faith, but it’s always my move. I always have a choice torun forward with confidence or not.

Angry Birds and Susan Boyle have both served as potent reminders to me in 2011 that I can run the race at a high rate of speed and with confidence—confidence that hewho began a good work in me will be faithful to bring it to completion;confidence that I can approach His throne of grace (Heb. 10:19); confidence inmy approach to others (Hebrews 13:6); confidence, that just like an underratedSusan Boyle, I am responsible to use whatever gift I have received to serveothers, as a faithful steward of God’s grace (1 Peter 4:10), believing that Hewho began a good work in me will bring it to fruition! And justlike Susan Boyle, I can stun the world with the deposit that God has entrustedto me (2 Tim 1:14). Not me, but Christ in me, “so that in all things Godmay be praised through Jesus Christ.” (I Peter 4:11)

Thanks to some inspiration from Kate and Phil, I am now the owner of this awesome solar oven!

Lentils are cooking away....

My first full fledged meal that I cooked this week in my new oven was this Lentil Stew:

Sun Oven Lentil Stew

Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup carrots, chopped
3 cups celery root, peeled and chopped
2 cups rutabaga, peeled and chopped
1 pound brown lentils, picked over and rinsed
1 tablespoon herbes de Provence
8 cups vegetable broth
1 bunch kale, ribs removed, leaves coarsely chopped

Preparation
Set Global Sun Oven out to preheat. Remove the leveling tray and place a rack or trivet on the floor of the cooking chamber.
Heat the oil in a large (6 quart) light weight, dark pot. Add the onion, carrots, celery root, and rutabaga; sauté until beginning to soften, about 5 minutes. Stir in the lentils and herbes de Provence. Add broth and kale. Cover and transfer pot to the Sun Oven. Cook until the lentils are tender, about 1 hour. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Makes 8 servings.

Instead of herbes de Provence (what are those anyway?) I threw in some cumin (my favorite spice) and oregano, along with some cinnamon and salt and pepper. With the low winter sun, my oven isn't heating up over 250 degrees, so after cooking for 4 hours, I had to bring the pot inside and finish it up in the oven, but it was delicious, non the less. Abel has dubbed my oven as "mom's toy." And he's right--this is going to be a fun thing to play with all year long.

As 2011 comes to a close, and the flurry of December activities is almost over, I am finally finding time to record an update of all our activities this month.

We began the month of December with our 2nd annual neighborhood Christmas tree lighting ceremony and outdoor concert at our church. This was a wonderful way to say Merry Christmas to all our neighbors and usher in the truest meaning of Christmas.

Next, I put all my energy into our annual ladie's Christmas brunch, which turned out beautifully.

Our December did include a couple quiet nights by the fire--my favorite times this month.

Today, our good friends and new fellow staff members at church are moving in--across the street. We recently hired Chris to join us on staff at New Life Church, and as part of the transition, their family wanted to find a new (lower rent) home. That new place just happened to be across the street--caddy corner from Swanson Acres! We are super excited for us and for them. Our kids are already loving the close proximity and convenience of living on the same street. How odd and hilarious-- both pastors at New Life Church now share the same street address.

Forget Thanksgivng. It's All About Christmas

At least according to Abel. He told me last week, "Mom, I'm more of a Christmas guy." He's been talking about Christmas since before Halloween. From the moment school let out on Tues. this week, he's been hounding me to get out the Christmas decorations and start working on putting up lights around our house. His own room is already decked out with colorful lights and his small artificial tree and ornaments.

And today Abel started his first job--at a Christmas tree lot. He'll get his fill of Christmas trees--8 hours worth! He had to be at the lot today bright and early, and will spend all day moving trees and helping customers. He's very excited. And nervous. Dale and I put the fear of God (or his boss) in him this week. Abel's parting comment this morning: I will move ANYTHING or GET FIRED! He's taking his job seriously. ;-) Ciza will be working at the same lot. His first day is actually tomorrow. He's a wise boss who scheduled two brothers on separate shifts.

That little boy in blue and yellow airplane pajamas is nearly all grown up. Last weekend he dressed up in his fancy digs and my handsome young man went to his first high school Homecoming dance. Ciza wasn't too impressed with this milestone. He told me his reason for going--curiosity. His future plan--wait until senior prom to attend another school dance. That's just fine by me. I'm in no hurry to have my boy grow up.

Feeble Attempts

On the first weekend of Nov. our women's ministry at church is holding a craft boutique--we are raising money to help buy gifts for families who live in the transition shelter this Christmas. Because the boutique is my idea, I wanted to try and participate. I had this idea to make these cute ribbon coin purses.

I tried to pick something easy that I could manage with my feeble talents.

Today, I convinced Dale to move our heavy, stacked washer and dryer so that I could clean out behind it. I had no idea I'd find so many interesting things. Besides A LOT of dust balls, I found:

Giving Up and Starting Over

After 2 years I've given up. What started out as a brilliant idea in my mind's eye to build a fancy duck pond in the back yard has ended with me having to pay plenty of money to get the hole filled back up and bring some beauty back to our yard.

A couple months ago, Dale asked me to host a barbecue for some friends. I looked out at our back yard--the ginormous, gaping hole that keeps growing into an odd shape from all the rains, the deteriorating pile of sand next to that hole, and the bricks that are falling apart all over our porch--and I realized it was time for an overhaul.

And is now back to this... (still a complete mess!)

But now we have a mess with a plan attached to it. Abel has pulled every brick off our patio and he's eager to earn money jack-hammering up our old, cracked patio slab so we can lay the bricks back down in nice neat rows. We've sectioned off the chickens so we can plant new seed throughout the area and we'll plant rows of jasmine to hide the chicken fence.

We have a long way to go but, in a couple months, our yard should look like a brand new lush landscape!

Once upon a time, way back in 1945, Mike was but another unnamed rooster, just one of many chickens living on Lloyd and Clara Olsen’s farm and destined for the refrigerated section of the grocery store. On September 10, Mr. Olsen selected several chickens for the chopping block. As usual after decapitation, each chicken scrambled and scratched for a moment by reflex. One rooster, however, kept running around the yard, as if it hadn’t realized its head was sitting on the ground.

The next morning, the headless chicken was still proudly strutting around as if nothing had happened. Surprised and curious, the Olsens began feeding it, dripping a gruel of crushed grain and water down its throat, to see how long it could survive. And the rooster thrived—as much as it could without a head—climbing onto perches, making gurgling noises in an attempt to crow, and futilely attempting to preen its feathers with its phantom head. Well, today, Abel's chicken, Polka Dot, lost his head. The poor chicken was stumbling around the yard today looking seriously mangy and haggard, so Abel and I decided it was time to say goodbye. Abel didn't want to wring it's neck, and I was scared I might not be strong enough to swing my machete with enough force to make a clean chop. So, we called our friend, Ed. Ed is big and strong, but seeing that this was his first time to ever raise his hand to the chopping block, it took him three hard swings to finish the deed. It was pretty gross. But Abel, the good farmer, stood next to Ed and participated. I made barbecue chicken for dinner (not Polka Dot!) but Abel won't eat chicken tonight!

The last time I wanted to kill my chickens, I couldn't find one friend to come over and execute my machete, so I ended up calling the animal control. One hilarious afternoon, 4 men in full on hazard suits, breathing like Darth Vader, descended on my backyard and exterminated our 6 chickens with tanks full of poisonous gas and hauled them off in a huge white medical truck. That was embarrassing! But the event lends itself to great story telling, for sure.

Maui, The Day After

Despite my many protests, I had to board the plane and come home--home to the bills, house projects, yard work and laundry. After 14 days of sunning, swimming, reading, hiking, visiting and more swimming, it's pretty hard to adjust back to real living. Our vacation was perfect--except for one missing element--that being our daughter, Nizi, who stayed home and took responsibility for all of Abel's animals!

We were perfectly spoiled by grandpa John and grandma Dori, who shared their beautiful new condo, pool and delicious cooking with us. What a treat to finally share of bit of their new life on Maui.

It's vacation time at Swanson Acres. We all can't wait to escape the drizzle and gloom of Santa Barbara for two weeks of balmy weather on the Maui beaches. We are all excited to see Grandpa John and Grandma Dori, too!
Getting ready to leave on vacation is always quite an endeavor! But this year it's a little easier because Nizi won't be joining us. Our 23 year old working daughter is compelled to stay home and earn her paycheck. She's logging a lot of hours this summer, trying to save up for her senior year of school. I wish she was coming, but this vacation, no housesitter! So, I don't have to clean the house, wash sheets, and put away every stray item laying around our house. We can just pack and go!

Happy Sixteenth Birthday

The thrill of turning 16. On Friday we took Ciza and several of his friends to the lake for a day of tubing and wake boarding to celebrate his 16th birthday. What could be more fun than watching a herd of wild and crazy teenage boys play together all day long.

Even though I have passed this milestone with my daughter, it's somehow really different with Ciza. Because we have raised him from such a younger age, he seems, in many ways, like my first child. And I can't get over the strangeness I feel with a 16 year old son who is now a junior in high school.

I am certainly proud of him, and very thankful for him. And I love looking backward to see how much has changed over the years. (15th Birthday) (14th Birthday); (13th Birthday).

I love summertime.

A Mother's Day Spa Fundraiser for the East Side Boys and Girls Club.

90 ladies all enjoying facials, massages, makeup, manis and pedis. Entertainment and Lunch. That's how I spent my Saturday, and what a wonderful, but tiring way to spend it. We spent months and months planning and preparing, thinking and worrying, and yesterday it all came to fruition, and then a few hours later, we were merely vacuuming up the last remnants of the event.

I have lots of thoughts and impressions from the day. But after all was said and done, the thing I was most impressed with and grateful for is the amazing group of people who make up our New Life Church team. At 4pm on Friday, a host of us descended on the East Side Boys and Girls Club and set out to transform the gymnasium, a computer lab, a library and dance room and game room into a beautiful "Garden of Dreams" Men hauled and unloaded truckloads of gear and garden decor, a team of men and women set to work in the kitchen, and ladies put their decorating talents to work in all the different rooms. And Wow! The results were beyond expectation.

And Saturday, we were assured of the good results by all the oohs and ahhs of the guests as they arrived. Everyone laughed, relaxed, and was pampered by a host of professional estheticians. And our missions was accomplished--ladies were blessed, and we are able to give the Boys and Girls club a nice donation check. A win for everyone!

Abel has many names he calls me--Mom, Amy Grant, and Mother of Pearl are his favorites. But this weekend I dubbed myself Mega Mom!

Saturday was a full day of preparation for Easter Sunday.

8:00 am--I left the house and drove off to the flower market to purchase flowers for church.

9:00 am--I joined the teams of people at church, prepping and primping the church for our celebration on Sunday! The church was a buzz of activity all day long. We...

    built a beautiful flower arch
    decorated 5 kid's classrooms
    prepared tons of delicious hors d'oeuvres
    printed bulletins and name tags
    practiced skits
    prayed and cleaned

8:oo pm--I made pot roast, and mashed potatoes and broccoli casserole; ironed shirts and pants for my boys; polished shoes; and made two Easter baskets for two teenagers!

10:00 pm-- off to bed

And woke up this morning to a glorious Sunday! But I only had some short moments to snatch a few quick pictures. I never even captured one of our whole family together!

REAL Women Give Back

What better way to celebrate Passion Week than to expend myself with a little service to the most hurting and unfortunate in my community--homeless men and women.

Most of my efforts at church this year have gone into the planning and promotion of our new women's ministry. We call ourselves, R.E.A.L Women, and one of our values states that "The REAL Women of New Life Church are committed to extending love to our community through charitable acts of service that support and promote the betterment of our local neighborhoods and community.

Today we put that value into action by assisting with a local non-profit homeless organization in their annual foot washing and shoe distribution event. I, along with a bunch of ladies from church, helped serve breakfast, distribute brand new shoes and then wash the feet of about 300 homeless men and women in our community. On top of that, the women in our church set up a table and gave manicures and hand massage to all the homeless ladies (and a few men!).

God reminds us in Acts 10 that our “prayers and gifts to the poor [are] as a memorial offering before God."

Yet, I'm sure that all of us women found more blessing just in the act of serving, than those 20 or more women who walked away with clean cuticles and pretty painted nails.

Most of the time I walk or drive by all the homeless people who are out and about in downtown Santa Barbara, and I don't take the time to consider each one as an individual--a creation of God--who has a life story just as important as my own. Today, I took time to sit across a table from Michelle, Amanda, Susan, and Dawn and listen to their stories. I took time to hear about their children and hear their plans for the future. My heart was moved with compassion, and I walked away today with a little better perspective on the unearned blessings I've received in my own life.

Our church even got a little publicity in the local paper!

'We wanted the ladies to leave feeling really special today,” Volunteer Amy Swanson said. Women (and the occasional daring man) get to pick out a nail polish color and Swanson and the other volunteers go to work with clippers, files, and brushes. Swanson said it’s a good reminder of how much a little bit of time and effort can matter to someone else. 'It doesn’t take a lot to help other people and make them feel like they’re important,' Swanson said. "

Passion Week

This year, I started thinking about the observation of Lent. Maybe it’s more of a Catholic tradition, and that’s why it’s a tradition I have never celebrated as a ritual in my faith walk. But this year I decided to do a little research on different types of Lent customs, and I am coming to understand that there is great personal benefit. I mean, come on—I spend weeks looking for the perfect Christmas gifts, decorate the house, etc.… yet Easter preparations are often short: go to church and a family dinner. I have been convicted of the need to prepare my heart and mind for the significance of the Cross.

I need to take time to consider, day by day, my sin and how it’s all given-up in Jesus' act of love on Easter. Developing a repentant heart, a thankful heart and one prepared to rejoice completely in Christ’s victory—that is something worth taking time to celebrate every year, traditionally.

So, it’s a little late! But I set out to make some "Holy Week Eggs"--with little scripture meditations hidden away in the eggs--for my family to be surprised by this week. I was in a hurry this year, so I used plastic eggs, but I’m already thinking next year of blowing out the eggs, dying them decorating an “Easter tree”—just like Christmas.

In Praise of Beets!

One of the more fun benefits of having a box of organic vegetables delivered from local growers every week has been the adventure of learning to cook and eat new food! The contents of the box have sometimes puzzled all of us at Swanson Acres. We've had to resort to Google to discover the names of some of the odd shaped fruits and vegetables.

And for weeks, we've been receiving bunches and bunches of beets in our Plow to Porch abundance. I've let them rot and wilt in our refrigerator. I've never eaten a beet, cooked a beet or even been mildly interested in beets. I think there is something naturally unappetizing and unappealing about purple colored food

But, when I have food questions, I know who to ask. That's right. My sister, Kate--the vegetable expert! She suggested roasting the beets and serving them with feta cheese. Not only did I roast the beets, but I made a balsamic vinegar glaze, tossed the beets in the savory syrup, threw in some feta, and Voila! Delicious.

I'm hooked! On Beets! And what's even better--my whole family found them delicious.

If you are like me, and have never liked beets, I think this recipe will change your mind.

Roasted Beets with Balsamic Glaze

Ingredients:

2 lbs red beets, scrubbed clean, green tops removed
Olive Oil
salt and pepper
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. grated orange zest

Method

1 Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a roasting pan with aluminum foil. Place the beets in the pan. Rub olive oil over the beets, and sprinkle with salt. Cover the beets with another sheet of aluminum foil. Roast for 1 to 2 hours, depending on the size of the beets and how old they are. After 1 hour, test every fifteen minutes by poking a beet with the tines of a fork. Once the fork tines go in easily, the beets are done. 2 While the beets are cooling, prepare the balsamic glaze. In a small, shallow sauté pan, add the balsamic vinegar and sugar. Heat on high until the vinegar has reduced to a syrup consistency. Remove from heat.
3 After the beets have cooled for several minutes, but are still warm to the touch, peel off the outer skins and discard. Cut the beets into quarters or more, bite-sized pieces.
4 Place beets in a serving bowl. Pour balsamic glaze over the beets. Stir in grated orange zest, and add salt and pepper to taste. Add Feta cheese crumbles to make it extra yummy and garnish with a little orange zest to serve.

2 Years and Counting

Last Sunday marked our 2 year anniversary as pastors of New Life Church, and I just love this cake that the church made for us.

Anniversary's are good times to stop and reflect, (last year) and I have been doing a lot of that, this month, thinking about some surprising things I'm discovering about myself.

I think the most surprising discovery this year is how much I enjoy this job called
"pastor's wife." This has been a year of discovering new joys. In Jeremiah 29, God promises "I know the plans I have for you." He not only knows the plans, but he purposed them--tailored them just for me, and he always does more than we can ask or imagine (because of his great love for us, Eph. 3).

Earlier this year I began to realize just how much my heart is growing and expanding for my community and for this ministry to Santa Barbara that God has called me to.

Over the last 2 years my heart has been enlarging with compassion. And when I look back, I can see that my heart change is rooted in obedience to God’s word. When Dale and I were assigned to take over leadership of the church, I was very worried about the HOW. How could I (fill in the blank)?

But in the middle of all my questions about how, the Lord spoke just one scripture to me, Luke 16:10. “One who is faithful in very little, will also be faithful in much.” So I made my decision to trust God with each little step—just one day at a time.

And with each step of obedience, the Lord has drawn my heart closer and closer to my community. He’s connected my heart to the heart of my community—to my neighbor’s heart. And yes, I still have a long way to go! I don’t think that I can really call my self yet a “good Samaritan”

But our hearts always follows our actions. So when our actions line up with God’s words, and we act faithfully in each small step where He directs, then our hearts become energized with the joy of the Lord, and the sacrifices of time, resources and energy are surprisingly delightful.

Micah 6:8 says

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humblywith your God.

I actually think it works the other way around—at least from my experience—as we walk in humble obedience to God’s word, he gives us a heart of compassion that changes us from the inside, out and causes us to act toward others with justice and mercy.

I love spring break! The grand entrance to warmer weather, longer days, and the downhill slope of the school year. I'm happy as a lark today, sitting in my pj's at 9 in morning, sipping coffee on the sofa, with no particular agenda driving my day.

Holiday in L.A.

At my suggestion, the Swansons' decided to spend the President's Day holiday in Los Angeles at Universal Studios. The last time we visited this park was 7 years ago--it was the first theme park that we exposed our kids to back in summer of 2004. After being thoroughly jostled, bumped and shaken, I came home with a mixed review of the day. I REALLY felt my age today. I used to love being thrown around on the wild loops and curves of fast roller coasters, but those days are gone. Today, I had trouble tolerating the herky jerky of every 4D ride in the park. Nearly all required 3D glasses, and each one included an ample splashing of water, puffs of fog, blasts of cold air, or moving seats. But on the up side--we had fun just being a family together. Today, we set aside the daily demands that sometimes overtake our family, and we just enjoyed some laughter and good conversation. On the drive home, Abel took his headphones out of his ears for a brief moment and said, "Hey, family. Let's talk about our memories--like how was your day and what do you remember?" We all had a few chuckles that reminded us why we enjoy being together and why we appreciate each other. The day was a bit expensive, but can be counted priceless.

On Your Mark, Get Set... Go (And Happy Birthday Abel)

January is starting off at a fast and furious clip, but the race is already filled with anticipation and excitement.

As is our usual tradition, we began the year with a week of fasting and prayer--gathering together every day with our whole church family to look backward in thanks and move forward with anticipation. Dale and I both had a sense of expectancy for the week, but no amount of imagination could have matched the response of our church, and the hope and eagerness that surrounded us all week. It was a little out of the ordinary, to say the least, but the residual effect today, is a feeling of incredible eagerness to press forward into 2011 with gusto.

My heart is filled with plans and purposes for the new year, and I feel energized because I have so much to look forward to.

One of my goals this year: memorize the book of Ephesians.

On another note, I just want to set the record straight and say that I really do have the best husband in the whole world. Today is Abel's 14th birthday! YEA Abel!! But, also, poor =:( Abel.

Every year he is left with only my last bit of energy after all the holiday hoopla of December, and his birthday always feels like an endurance contest. Today, I endured pretty well and managed to muster up enough energy to make his favorite meal and invite a gang of people over for lunch and celebrations. Abel wanted to take his friends bowling for his birthday, after the party. I was braced for a long afternoon in a loud and stinky bowling alley when, to my surprise, Dale called out for all the boys to hop in the car for Boys Bowling!

My super hero husband saved the day, and left me with two glorious hours of peace and quiet!

So, now, the kitchen mess is going to wait and I'm off to take a long afternoon nap....

A few of my favorite Christmas memories

1982

It was Christmas Eve day and a typical snowy, blustery winter storm. My dad hopped in the car with my sister for a quick errand to the grocery store, only a couple miles down road. But even before he finished purchasing the milk and eggs, mountains of snow and drifts blocked the way home-too much snow even for our 4 wheel jeep to handle. Walking home was out of the question with my little sister who must have been about 9 that Christmas. My dad and Kate spent Christmas eve and Christmas day just a mile down the road with our friends, trapped in an ironic situation by snow and wind, while my mom and I waited at home together. I remember my dad calling on the phone singing, "I'll be home for Christmas..." and I remember sitting by our wood burning stove, drinking hot chocolate with my mom...waiting.

1988

This is the Christmas I was engaged to Dale. Dale flew from Santa Barbara to Colorado on the day after Christmas and joined our family's traditional ski trip in Keystone. He met much of my extended family and we celebrated our engagement and my parents 25th wedding anniversary together. That was a starry-eyed Christmas.

1990

Our first of many Christmas' in Hawaii. Christmas 1990 is a sad and happy memory--our first Christmas after my mom died in April of 1990. Dale and I were only celebrating our 2nd married Christmas, and Kate was a junior in high school. We were all too sad to take up our usual holiday traditions, so we packed up and flew to Hawaii where we turned a blind eye to Christmas and immersed ourselves in the sand and sun. We skipped the snow and cold, but exchanged that for lots of rain storms. I think we saw the sunshine for about two our of 14 days in Maui. My memories that Christmas are swimming on Big Beach in the pouring rain, playing lots of tennis in between the downpours and sitting up late playing cards with Dale and Kate. I'm so thankful we went to Hawaii that year. It turned what will always forever be a sad memory into one that can still makes me smile. Notice in this picture that Dale hasn't left the 80's. You can laugh at his hot pink swim suit and pink hat! My Christmas shirt is pretty "hip" too!

1998

Christmas in Morocco in 1998 was another of my most memorable. Kate and Phil were living and working in Morocco that year, and Kate bought me a ticket to come visit for Christmas, so off I went, leaving Dale behind to celebrate Christmas on his own with his family. Kate, Phil and I shopped in the markets of Rabat, celebrated a Ramadan feast with one of their friends (who dressed us up like Moroccan brides and gave us makeovers and henna tatoos all evening) hiked in the mountain near Marrakesh and ate bastila and kebabs at a little restaurant for Christmas eve dinner. On Christmas day, Kate and Phil travelled with me on the train 2 hours to the Casa Blanca airport, where I boarded a plane and spent Christmas day flying over Europe on my way home. (This picture is of me and Kate dressed up in our costumes. (You can see how happy I was =:( by the look on my face).

2003

This Christmas is so memorable for one reason only. For Christmas, Dale and I bought 2 round trip and 3 one way plane tickets to/from Bujumbura, Burundi. December 2003, the court date to adopt our children was finalized.

The Love Dare

I wanted to write a little bit about the gift I gave Dale for Christmas this year. Starting back in October, I began quietly working on this project I was inspired by some conversations I had with a couple of my women friends, to commit myself to this 40 day journey. My goal was to consciously work harder at demonstrating my love for Dale. ..."let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." (1 John 3:18) I recorded each day's love dare, my successes, failures and honest thoughts for Dale to read in a journal that I presented him for Christmas.

This was an exercise in self-improvement. Taking time each day to think focused thoughts about my relationship with Dale was so worth it.

I don’t think that I’m always the best at showing you how much I love Dale; I know that I often respond out of the stress in my life, and I know that I could work on being more Christ-like in the way that I demonstrate my love, and as such, this project turned out to be a lot harder than I ever expected it to be. In fact, it was one of the hardest things I‘ve done all year. It wasn’t hard because of Dale; it was hard because of Me. It was challenging to stay motivated and disciplined to keep going for 40 days. I didn’t always succeed each day, and some weeks, life just got in the way. But, those setbacks only made me more determined to finish this project because I saw clearly how our lives as pastors and parents so easily overtakes the most important priority in my life—my marriage. More than anything else, over the past three months, I was confronted with my own flaws and foibles. Working on this project was humbling and eye-opening and also, encouraging at some points, and I'm so glad I completed it! And the continuing challenge... now I have a long list of New Year's "goals" to put into action.

It's Face Time

Today, Abel and Ciza had a banner day. They both bought new i touch devices. Ciza and Abel have been asking (begging, pouting and everything in between) for the privilege of owning an i touch. For many reasons that I won't detail here, Dale and I have said NO. But, as it goes, every firm NO eventually becomes a reluctant YES. Between their own savings and a few gifts from the grandparents, both boys were able to make their coveted purchase today.

It made for a very interesting day. First of all, on the way driving out of the Mac Store parking lot, Ciza made a profound observation. He wisely commented, "You know what? I realize that the anticipation of wanting something and waiting is a lot more thrilling than actually buying it."

Next, in the car on the drive home, Abel realized that the i pod touch has the capability to use Face Time. He can video conference with other people who have i phones! Watching the smile on Abel's face when he discovered this feature made my whole day. His sheer joy at this discovery was worth a million bucks.

So, all day long, Dale and I suffered quietly as Abel called us on his "face time" every 5-10 minutes. He called us from his bedroom loft, from the backyard, from the bathroom and from the same room! But the kicker was when Abel and Ciza both called me to offer a "digital" good night from their bed. The usual routine in our house is that after the boys turn out the lights at night, I hear a holler from down the hall, "Mom...come say goodnight" But tonight was different. I was lying in my bed and the phone rang. Up popped Abel's cute face to say good night. I hung up, and the phone rang again. This time, it was Ciza, saying goodnight from his bed.

For better or for worse...I guess we are a perfect picture of a contemporary family in a digital age!

Christmas vacation

I just got home from the grocery store and some last minute mall shopping. Phew. I'm exhausted. In fact, I almost fell asleep in the line at the mall! I always prepare for Christmas way in advance. I don't like to do anything at the last minute, so around June time, I always start saving and thinking about Christmas--picking up little trinkets here and there, making shopping lists and strategizing my budget. But, inevitably, there are last minute details to take care of. Unfortunately, I can't shop in September for groceries for our Christmas Eve dinner!

Up until today, I have been intensely focused on others. I have 97 high school students who needed my attention and planning, I have at least 15 students who were counting on me to write eloquent letters of recommendation, raphodizing about their wonderful qualities, so they can have a chance of going to Stanford or MIT. We had a number of church events to celebrate Christmas with our neighborhood, our church family and our friends.

Now, we are four days away from Christmas, and I told my boys today, "The next 4 days are family time." But "family time" also involves shopping and baking and wrapping and cooking, among other things. So...

Today I

Wrote some thank you notes

Helped Abel clean some muddy straw from his chicken pen

Started driving with Dale to deliver Christmas packages in Simi Valley, but then turned around after we got caught in a bad traffic jam (mission not accomplished)

Ate the most delicious olive tapenade and tomato sandwich on our way home, at a new Deli

Stood in line at Macy's for 30 minutes. Listened to Abel complain about how hungry he was, and the ladies in front of me, argue with the cashier about the sale prices

Researched a new recipe for potato breakfast casserole. (Christmas morning!) because I can't find my usual cookbook

Made a grocery list.

Printed my grocery list.

Lost my grocery list.

Decided to go to grocery story without my list and try to remember everything I needed.

Performed a private Christmas Concert in my car: Audience of One.

Send my boys to youth group and collapse exhausted onto the couch and surf the Internet while drinking Apple Cider with a Diet Coke. (and probably nibbling on the insane amount of cookies and candy sitting around our house).

A Little Hospitality

You might think that hosting an open house for 100 people would be stressful or worrisome. All day yesterday, my friends inquired with sympathy, "Have you been working hard all day?" I just smiled. Really, all I did last night was show up at my own party. Our wonderful maid, Ana, cleaned the house squeaky clean on Monday; and my friend Ruth volunteered to make all the food! She showed up with pans and pans of delicious tamales, rice and beans, set it all out on the table and replenished the food all night long. I think everyone agreed we ate some of the best tasting tamales in Santa Barbara, last night. (She even cleaned my kitchen afterward!)

Let me pause to say a few words about tamales. I've always been vaguely aware of the Christmas tamale tradition, but it wasn't until I moved to Santa Barbara that I realized what a huge deal tamales are around the holidays. Stores stock mountains of corn husks and pallets of pre-made masa, the corn-based dough that forms the bulk of the tamale. There's someone in almost every office whose fund-raising group sells tamales by the dozen every December — and believe me, there are plenty of takers, even among folks who usually make their own everything. Why? Tamales are heaven's food. And no wonder. I looked up the ingredients this morning and read that the recipe calls for pounds of lard! I've never actually tried to make tamales myself. There's really no need when it's so easy to buy the real deal in this town...

It's been a while since I entertained so many people all at once in my home. I love entertaining. Hospitality does not have to involve a lot of time and effort really. All day yesterday, I was remembering my mom and how much she loved to entertain. I have very fond memories of the parties my mom used to put on for her friends, and I can still see her in my memory, laughing and relaxing once the party started! She was a wonderful example for me. Hospitality, is also one of those characteristics that seems to come with the job of Pastor's Wife... "contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality." (Romans 12:13) It could be one of the more demanding parts, but I chose to make it a fun part of the job!

We had a full house last night--standing room only. One friend asked me, "What is the most number of people have you fit in your house before?" I answered, "Right now!"

And today we have at least 10 lbs of sweets left over! After everyone was gone and the last dish was cleaned up in the kitchen, I commented, "What in world are we going to do with all these sweets?" Ciza quickly chimed in, "Eat them, of course!"

So here's to the holidays!

Happy as a Duck in Water

"Happy as a Duck in Water!" Whoever originated this quote sure knew a lot about the nature of ducks! They absolutely love being in the water, and while today is a miserable, soggy day in Santa Barbara, our two Cayugas are in duck heaven! I've been watching them all day from my kitchen window as they've been swimming happily in our yet to be completed duck pond. We are the proud owners of a big dirt hole in our back yard. Last winter the hole filled up with rain water and stayed that way all through the rainy season. Summer came and went, and here we are again--rainy season is starting, and we still have a large dirt hole in our backyard, and now it's full of rain water AGAIN!

But, at least this winter, the ducks are making good use of it--completed or not. The boys dug the pond a year and a half ago (July 2009), and as things go around here at Swanson Acres, we might possibly finish the pond in another year or 2! We are not known for our speedy attention to house projects.

So, while I'm still only dreaming of a beautifully landscaped pond, surrounded by water lilies and bamboo, our ducks don't know the difference. They are happy and splashy in the muddy mess at Swanson Acres!

Today is known as your birthday! What a perfect day to give expression and appreciation, for the love and care I have received from you. I have, in my life time, met and known many fine fathers, and read about many great men, yet, I can truthfully say I am glad I am your daughter.

My memories of you are crammed with vivid recollections of delightful experiences we had together--from my childhood to the present. So many special times I cherish spending with you. Many of those times, together on our birthday--waking up in the cold, early mornings and loading the car with our skis, anticipating a day on the slopes with just you. Or in my adult years, just enjoying wonderful birthday dinners together.

Everything I write on here this month seems to be centered around our church. I guess because, being pastors, that starting on Dec. 1st, our life pretty much revolves around the church's Christmas celebrations.

2nd Time Around

Today, I am REALLY tired. Yesterday, the women at our church, hosted our 2nd annual Women's Christmas Brunch. Last year (2009) I had 75 women attend and this year, we hosted 120 women for a wonderful morning full of good food, music and a Christmas message. I think next year, we will have to find a new space to hold our event!

Christmas is a perfect opportunity for any of us to connect with the real Light of Christmas, and in our culture, is a time when so many hearts long for love and connection.

Recently, I was reading an article about the "Love Bug" virus. Back in the year 2000, a virus attached to an email with the subject line "I love you" spread to 45 million computers worldwide in just a few hours. Why? Because so many people, even tough business executives, couldn't resist opening an attachment that arrived with the subject line "I love you." It was a message that instantly broke through the clutter, slicing swiftly past caution and common sense, to the heart.

In the article, an Australian columnist and lecturer Michael Newman wrote:

"It was all over in seconds. Over 40 million computers worldwide melted down from the heart. In lives increasingly experienced via monitors, there's a hunger for genuine empathy and direct, personal contact. People live in a cold, scary and often heartless world. Companies fire them. Spouses divorce them. Institutions stitch them up. Fear stalks the daily news.. . . There is an incredible and untapped need for love out there."

All people are essentially seeking connection. People naturally want to respond to their God-created inner need--a deeply embedded inner desire to experience community, authentic relationship, and the mystery of love. Christmas is so often attached to deep-seated meaning from youngest childhood, a never-quite-lost connection to wonder and anticipation and joy and celebration, promise and surprise.

Hopefully, the 120 ladies who filled our church yesterday, experienced the warmth and love the Jesus has to offer, and felt rekindled in their spirits and warmed by the experience of community. I loved planning and putting on the event! I love spending time with so many wonderful women and I love that I get to be a small part of spreading Christmas blessing to others.

A New Commitment

"A man is called selfish not for pursuing his own good, but for neglecting his neighbor's."

This thought was the impetus for an idea Dale had earlier this year, to plan a Christmas tree lighting celebration for the first week of Advent. He wanted to plan an event that would announce the Christmas season to our whole neighborhood and bless our surrounding community with good music and treats. And so, it came about on Wed., we celebrated our first New Life Church Christmas tree lighting. For two hours, different groups of musicians played sets, one after the other, and beautiful music from local Santa Barbara bands and choirs filled the air and cheered up the neighborhood. It was a warm and wonderful feeling to welcome people from all of our surrounding blocks, as they wandered outdoors and joined our church family on our lawn, sharing cookies, cider and Christmas spirit.

Lady Bird Johnson once said, "While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many." It's true, our neighborhood is filled with thousands of people. Some, I pass on the street every day, and offer a friendly wave. Some, I see and never even stop to say hello--maybe they are walking to work in the mornings, or walking their dogs.

Dale and I do know all of the occupants of the 18 homes on our street, and we engage in short conversations on occasion, but on Wed. night, I actually had an opportunity to chat more intentionally with some of my neighbors and discover a little more about their lives. And now I feel more connected. This should happen more often! Watching the buzz of conversations and joviality among the all the people as they connected with one another, made me realize how much I miss when I categorize my neighbors as passing strangers On Wed. night, everyone left feeling a little less anonymous, and hopefully a lot more blessed, and I left with a renewed commitment to build stronger connections with the very people I live amongst.

Happy Thanksgiving 2010

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving day yesterday with family. We celebrated with Dale's family and my cousin's family who drove up from San Diego. It was a beautiful sunny day that included lots of good food and laughter. Toward the end of the day, Abel announced that we should all sit in a circle and say one thing we are thankful for. As we moved around the room, we all expressed our thanks for our families, for God's grace and forgiveness and for our friends. When Abel's turn came, he looked around the room and encouraged everyone with a little sermon. He said, "Hey, people, you all forgot to say thanks for the most important thing. You all forgot to say thanks for Yourself. I mean, didn't God make all of us and shouldn't we be thankful for who we are?" This really blessed me. My son really does understand who God made him to be and there is a sense of confidence about him.

Today we enjoyed our traditional beach walk, (2008) and we enjoyed our typical Santa Barbara post holiday weather.

A Night Out

Last week, Dale announced to me that he had two tickets for the Lakers vs. Bulls game on Tues. night, and did I want to drive to L.A. for a date night. My first reaction was to turn down the offer with my usual excuses. Driving to L.A. on a Tues night means dealing with the potential of rush-hour traffic jams, getting home way past midnight, and sitting through a few hours of only mild entertainment after a long day of work. But then I remembered that I've been complaining a bit about the monotony in my life, so I spontaneously agreed to go with Dale. The evening went pretty much as predicted: 4 hours of stop and go traffic on the way there, and then I fell asleep, for most of the 2nd half. But actually, I felt pretty cool to be out on the town in downtown L.A. with a crowd of energized people. I was exhilarated by the lights, loud noise and glitz and glam at the Staples Center. And, it was true, we didn't arrive back home until well after midnight, but the evening did jolt me out of some of the lethargy I've been feeling and it turned out to be a fun way to start off our Thanksgiving weekend!

Fresh Produce Delivered to Swanson Acres

At the beginning of the year, I made it one of my main goals to conquer our grocery bill and tame the wild beast that was consuming our monthly budget. I've never had the patience or energy to hassle with coupon cutting and I don't like to spend hours in the grocery store walking down the isles with my calculator, comparing all the prices of every item. I simply don't have time. But I determined that I would find the will and the way to lower our out of control grocery budget!

After months of hard work and research, I've found a system that actually works for this busy, working mom. And my plan even includes a box of fresh, local organic produce every Wednesday!

And now, I'll let you in on my new found secrets.
The first item on the grocery list is:
My favorite part: one family box of produce delivered weekly from Plow to Porch Organics
$45.00/week

The second money saver:
Each month we buy $90 worth of groceries from Angel Food. Angel Food is an at cost grocery program that supplies low cost groceries. Our church is a local host/distributor site. Some of the food is not perfectly suited to our taste, but it serves us well on those, "oh no, what should we feed two hungry teenager" days.

And thirdly:
I signed up for a menu plan with EMealz. You must check out this website if you are a busy mom on a budget! It costs $5.00/month and offers a long list of pre-planned weekly menus to choose from AND the shopping list! We live two blocks from Ralphs grocery store (A Calif. chain) and every Thursday, EMealz publishes a 7 day meal plan/grocery list that is made up of sale items at Ralphs. So for about $80.00, I can buy seven days worth of meals.

Total for the month is $590! I still have to add in a few extras on top of all that, but I have been grandly successful at keeping my grocery bill under $800!

To some of you non-California residents and families without teenagers, this might still sound like an expensive grocery budget, but I will confess that it's a big saving for Swanson Acres!

I sometimes think about the days before we had children when I shopped at specialty markets and filled up my grocery cart with gourmet cheese and expensive, organic meats. But keeping teenage boys full is a challenge that demands many compromises.

My Life's Been Interrupted by Routine

The other night while attending church, one of my friends asked me how I'm doing. I quickly and thoughtlessly responded, "Bored. My life is really boring right now." Later, my own response started me thinking about the idea of boredom -- because I don't really think I'm suffering from boredom so much as just the boring symptoms of my fall routine. Like I often do when I'm bored, I spent some aimless time surfing around the Internet and read some Wikiquote quotes on Boredom. Yes, I know it's absurd to browse so shallowly by reading Wikiquotes on a subject I claim to be interested in, but all that to say, my favorite quote was one by Virginia Woolf. "Boredom is the legitimate kingdom of the philanthropic." It intrigued me, but then I realized I really had no idea what she's talking about. Is she trying to say that the altruistic endeavors that I give so much time to are merely a result of a lack of creativity and energy for my own life?

Or maybe the words of Aldous Huxley fit better my circumstances. He says that a "true traveler finds boredom agreeable rather than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty—his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure."

I think that sums things up a little more succinctly. I am a little bored in my daily routines at the moment, but I'm by no means unhappy. I've been spending my time WISELY, dividing up my days in an even and regular beat, marching to a steady drumbeat of tasks that demand my time and attention. When I turn around and look behind me, I can see a the productive results of my time well managed and well spent. There's lots of pleasure in that picture.

Rather than BORING, maybe I should say that my days haven't been very INTERESTING lately. But I can't even really claim that to be true. I've been intensely interested in the amazing progress Abel is making in school and the way Ciza is handling himself on the high school football team. I've been personally interested in my new morning bike riding routine and my own challenge to grocery shop on a tighter budget. And I'm profoundly interested in the small daily insights I glean from my bible reading. On a trifling note, I'm even interested in who is going to win this season of Survivor!

And sometimes boring can just means RESTFUL.

T. Mike Runger said "The cure for boredom is a good book." I don't know who he is, but I'll take his advice. I've got a whole pile of delicious looking books stacked on my bedside table, and I think now is a good time to start digging in. That is, after I finish grading all those boring school essays!

I Let It Happen Again

Oh when, Oh when will I ever stop being a procrastinator. Re fried beans, cantaloupe and grading papers--three things I really, really realllllly dislike. I've been sitting on the sofa in my "grading spot" for hours. My eyes are blurry and my mind is tired, and I still have mounds of paper to go. Grades are due on Monday, so I won't be seeing the sunlight or smelling the freshness of outdoors this weekend.

It's A New Season

School started over a month ago and its finally dawned on me that I'm in a new season, and I'm not just talking about the calendar. My life has completely shifted now that Abel is in junior high. It's taken me a whole month to figure out why I don't feel so disconnected and frazzled this fall. And then today, it occurred to me. I've graduated! My boys don't really need me anymore--not like they used to. Ciza stays after school until 6pm for football practice, gets a ride home, and then quietly works his homework without ever asking for help. Abel joined the jr. high after school basketball team, and I don't pick him up until 4:30 pm, and amazingly, he's become pretty self-sufficient with his homework, too.

So for me, it means I have been officially fired from the two jobs that consumed me most the last few years: chauffeur and homework policewoman. And that makes my life really different. I actually have time to put a decent dinner on the table most days, and even get some laundry done! And since I get off work this year by 11:30, I have lots of extra time in the day to help Dale at church and work on those writing assignments that keep coming my way! Having extra time in my day hasn't meant more leisure, but it sure is making me more productive!

And this weekend, Dale and I managed to get away to one of our favorite spots--Catalina island. We were given a wonderful gift from our church for our anniversary, so this weekend, we drove to Long Beach, hopped on the ferry and spent 24 hours enjoying the beach at Catalina. We enjoyed dinner and a beautiful evening sunset on Fri. night, and on Sat. the weather was hot, so we spent 3 lazy hours on the beach swimming in Catalina's crystal clear (but cold!) water before heading home.

A 13 Year Old's Wisdom

Sometimes I’m amazed by my kids—especially Abel. He lives most of the time in a state of teenage oblivion—seemingly unaware of his surroundings. But then, at times, he expresses the wisdom of a sage, and I realize he understands a lot more than he sometimes gets credit for.

Yesterday, Abel came home from school with this wisdom...

“Mom,” he said, “today some mean boy was making fun of my stuttering.”

“What did you do?” I asked, trying to hide how sad I was that my son had to suffer the cruelty of another thoughtless child.

Abel explained, “I didn’t get mad, mom. I just handed my anger to God. And then God spoke inside of me and pushed the mean boy’s words out of my head. Then I heard God’s voice coming in, and he said, ‘Abel, your voice is fine. Your voice is beautiful. Your voice is like a music song to me.’ And so I forgave that boy because I know God thinks I’m OK.”

And there was nothing else for me to say. Abel gets it. He’s only 13 and he’s already understanding that God gets the last word in his life, and when “you know the truth, the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

Wedding Weekend

A beautiful place to spend the weekend!

Dale and I had a wonderful weekend, celebrating the marriage of two young people from our church. We traveled up to Lake County in Northern CA. and enjoyed two nights in this beautiful setting and celebrated two beautiful people. It was a perfect weekend and I fell in love with the area of Lake County. We were busy with wedding celebrations, but we did manage to sneak in a moment to take a dip in the warm lake water!

Today marks the end of summer vacation. Tuesday is "back to school" for this reluctant teacher. We have had crummy weather all summer--one of the foggiest summers on record. But today was a oven hot and sunny day at the beach. A perfect summer day and we took advantage of every ounce of it.

Looking Back

Dale and I just spent the last 2 days camping with our church youth group. I couldn't help reflecting on our 21 years of marriage, and all the fun times we have spent ministering to young people. When I met Dale, he was working as the youth pastor for his church (later, our church), and so youth ministry became my ministry, too. I can't forget that we spent our first marriage anniversary on a camping trip with a bunch of high school kids. Back then we called our youth group, SLAM--it stood for Students Living a Mission. Those were fun days we spent in our 20's when we were barely older than the kids we were leading.

In our 30's, Dale and I pastored the college group at our church, The Underground. Those were definitely our "pre-kid" days. We held the college group in the underground basement of our church from 10:00 pm to midnight. After cleaning up, shutting down and then winding down, we never went to bed on those Friday nights before 2 am. And then we would sleep in all day Saturday. Here we are summer camping on Santa Cruz island. That's me in the front left corner with my "hip" flannel shirt and Dale in front with the baseball cap.

This week Dale and I got to go back in time and take another camping trip with the youth group from our church. We camped out with all the kids and the 20 something leaders. We had a good time enjoying our own teenagers and their friends. Do you notice I'm even wearing the same flannel camping shirt?

A Good Deal

All summer I've been thinking about Adirondack chairs and picturing a pair on my back patio. The high price has deterred me. Today, I went out for a walk and a cup of morning coffee. On the way home, I saw these chairs on our neighbors lawn with a sign that said $10.00. I ran home, grabbed by checkbook and now I'm the owner of the set. All I have to do now is decide on a fun paint color to spruce them up.

Viva La Fiesta!

Fiesta--Old Spanish Days--is a Santa Barbara yearly tradition. In the beginning of August each summer, our city turns into a fanfare of dancing performances, delicious Mexican food markets all over town, carnival style amusements and so much more.
Fiesta is a cultural celebration highly anticipated by local and out of towners, perhaps because it is the only time of year when it is acceptable to wear over sized sombreros in public and chant, “Ole, Ole Ole!” without receiving a disdainful glare. People revel in mariachi music, rodeos, and a smorgasbord of authentic Mexican fare. The town swarms with kids and adults launching cascarones (confetti filled eggs) at each other. It's not unusual to walk downtown during Fiesta and have a complete stranger smash a cascarone on your head! Vendors line the streets for the whole week selling cascarones. Today, I stopped to talk to one particular lady who was selling what looked like a store full of confetti eggs--each one elaborately painted in a different design. She sells them for .25 cents! I asked her how long it took to make all the eggs, and she proudly explained to me that she creates one flat of eggs every day for an entire year!

The last day of Fiesta concludes with the children's parade. In all the years that I've lived in Santa Barbara, I've never even been to the children's parade, but this year we decided to actually participate in the parade first hand! We had a blast. Some talented ladies at our church designed a float--a "Santa Barbara Mission on wheels." And we invited the kids from our church to join us and walk the parade. It was impossible not to have a good time being outdoors and downtown this morning with what felt like the entire town. There were literally thousands of people who turned out to watch the children. And all the kids looked so cute dressed in their Fiesta costumes!

A Summer Sunday

Today was a perfect summer Sunday: church, some time with Dale's family, and then a long dinner picnic on the Mission lawn with friends. The sun finally came out today like it's supposed to. We sat on the lawn for 3 hours, chatted with friends, and watched the kids play soccer and water fight. Nizi chatted away, and it was good to hear her bubbly laughter. Abel worked himself into a sweaty mess running around with the boys, and I just enjoyed being with my family. A good way to spend our Sabbath.

Extended Family

Nizi is home from Burundi--the place she calls, "the motha land." She was there visiting her extended family--our extended family. I have a mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, but I never considered that I would have a child-in-law or a grandma-in-law. As you raise your adopted children, they are yours in every sense of the word. At the same time, there is an aspect to their life that a parent can never share. It make me feel left out. I want to share every part of my children.

And yet, the truth is, despite any conflicted feelings, my life is certainly enriched. There is a whole family group of beautiful people who don't speak my language or understand my world, but who share the most important thing in common with me--my children. And that can't be anything but a blessing.

For the Swanson family, this is a week of MEGA fun. We are having an amazing experience putting on our first annual kids sports camp on the East side of Santa Barbara. Dale's vision was to offer a quality, but low-cost sports camp for families in our community with lower income--Mega Sports Camp. And this week, the camp is happening with 75 children--participating in basketball, soccer and cheer leading. We are running the camp at a local elementary school, who has given use of their property for the week. The school district is providing free lunch for all the kids, many local businesses have donated supplies and extras (i.e. one local printing company is making each child a set of personal baseball cards with the child's own picture) , McDonald's donated snacks, and so much more...
Ciza is playing drums in the band and Abel is having fun teaching the 5 and 6 year olds during the game time. It's a great experience for our whole family to work together in this way, making a difference in our community.

June Gloom Continues.....

Well, we returned from our wonderful, SUNNY vacation on the east coast and joined the bulk of Santa Barbarans, enduring a GLOOMY summer. Uggg. Where is the sun? Every day looks like the picture above. The sun is hidden by a thick layer of fog that just wont' burn off. I will admit that I get a little beach obsessed in the summer. I feel a compulsive urge to spend the right proportion of my time sitting in my beach chair, reading and soaking up the sun. The number of quality "beach time" becomes some kind of gauge of the quality of my "vacation time". But so far this summer, the gray sky and muddy looking water is not even a temptation. O sun, Please come out and warm us up!
